Introduction To Spanish Express's Unique Offering

A great experience for a young learner (or at any age) of A-level Spanish, is to combine study with a trip to the country itself as part of a life changing experience.  At Spanish Express, we've crafted our language courses to accommodate a dynamic one-week schedule - though it's commonly known for students to extend their stay. Their experience can often be a combination of both continued learning and meaningful connections established with host teachers with our Spanish Homestay Immersion Programme (Ship).  The following account embodies just such a connection and is told from the point of view of her host teacher Mónica.

A Step Beyond Traditional Language Learning

Traditional language classes may fall short in providing the cultural depth crucial for mastering the subtleties of Spanish.  Our programmes are intricately designed to enhance Spanish skills while immersing students in a rich cultural tapestry. Megan was a 16 year old Spanish A-level student, from London.  Her parents rewarded her with a stay with us during her half term.  She came to us in the month of October, arriving in Dosrius, Barcelona.

Experiencing Spanish Culture Firsthand

My family decided to invite her and her parents, first of all, for a lunch featuring my father's speciality, a Catalan seafood casserole with rice. This dish, renowned for its saffron flavour, offered Megan's family a delightful culinary experience and her first chance to practise her Spanish with us. My two lively golden retrievers, Rumba and Samba, were also excitedly engaged in this discourse - though in their own way.

A Rural Escapade

During their visit, we explored Rukimon park in Dosrius, Barcelona, home to various donkey breeds within the Montnegre-Corredor Natural Park. Megan was an animal lover, and was able to interact with the donkeys.  The donkeys relished the attention, and made this occasion come to life for young Megan.

Discovering The Heart Of Barcelona

Megan also spent a day with my goddaughter Claudia exploring downtown Barcelona. They wandered through the Old Town (Ciutat Vella), including the Barrio del Born, known for its mediaeval streets, cafes, and fashion stores. At Plaza Catalunya, a key city landmark, they admired the equestrian statue and the blend of historical and modern city elements.

Wandering Through The Gothic Quarter

Their exploration continued to the Gothic Quarter, with its intact mediaeval architecture and the majestic Cathedral of Barcelona, surrounded by a beautiful garden. The Ramblas, a bustling promenade from Plaza de Catalunya to the city’s port, was another highlight, teeming with urban vitality.

Gaudi’s Masterpieces

And a further highlight was the Sagrada Familia, Antonio Gaudí's unfinished masterpiece, showcasing modernist architecture. To conclude Megan's visit, I surprised her with a trip to Camp Nou, FC Barcelona's iconic stadium, a fitting end to her memorable stay.
